What is Boxing Day?

Good Morning Everyone!

Hope you all had a lovely Christmas, Hanukkah or what ever it is you celebrate over this holiday period.

Today it is Boxing Day, which takes me back to the conversation I had with my (American) friend just little under a year a go where she had heard of boxing day but had never really knew what it was about. I explained that I think its something to do with either when many moons a go us Brits used to open our Christmas Presents, or something a long those lines, and how it was a bank holiday for us.

So I figured I would do some research to see if my theory was right. According to my research there are a number of possible origins for boxing day, the closest I could find to what I had told my friend was:

Boxing Day was traditionally a day off for servants and the day when they received a  ‘Christmas Box’ from the master. The servants would also go home on Boxing Day to give ‘Christmas Boxes’ to their families.
In recent years, Boxing Day, is more of an extension on Christmas Day really, spending time with family and friends, and eating Christmas Day leftovers, its has also recently been a big day in sports, where many sports teams will play in their respective field.

It is also the start of the Sale season in retail, so could also I guess be our version of the US's Black Friday....

Speaking of Sales, I'm off  (Window) Shopping!

See ya
